Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Tommy Doyle has officially announced his medical retirement from the NFL at just 26 years old. The decision comes after a devastating left leg injury left him with nerve damage, preventing him from returning to the field at the level he once played.
Doyle, who had been with the Bills since being drafted in 2021, revealed his decision on February 14. “I'm just unable to play football at a high level, and it's time. When you know, you know,” Doyle stated, acknowledging the harsh reality that his injury has brought upon his career.
His most recent injury occurred during the second preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in August 2023. It was another major setback after he had already been battling a torn ACL in his right leg from the 2022 season.
He had worked relentlessly to return from that first injury, but before he could fully recover, another devastating blow ended his hopes of a comeback.
"I was really battling and competing and working to come back from that (ACL) injury, only to be kind of struck with an even more disastrous injury," Doyle shared.
The young athlete admitted that he initially struggled with frustration and anger over how things unfolded. "There were a lot of negative emotions and anger," he said. But after taking time to reflect, he found perspective and gratitude for the lessons he learned during his career.
Doyle ultimately decided to step away from the game and pursue a future outside of football. “Football is something that I’ve loved and put my life into. I put a lot of time, effort, and energy into trying to get back on the field. But ultimately, that's really not the plan God has for me, and I know that to be true. I feel that this is the time to announce it and move on."
Though he hasn’t revealed what his next steps will be, Doyle made it clear that he still holds a deep love for the Buffalo Bills and the city of Buffalo. He plans to remain a supporter—just from the stands instead of the field.
"I'd probably like to come to a tailgate and drink some Labatt Blue Lights," he joked, showing his appreciation for the Bills’ passionate fanbase.
During his time with the team, Doyle made an impact both on and off the field. As a rookie, he played in 11 games and had one of the most memorable moments of his career in a playoff game against the New England Patriots.
In the Wild Card round, he caught a one-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Allen in the fourth quarter, helping the Bills secure a dominant 47-17 victory.
Despite his early retirement, Doyle says what he will cherish most from his time in Buffalo are the relationships he built along the way. "It's an amazing town. It's an amazing city. The fan base is awesome," he said.
He also expressed gratitude for the bonds he formed with his teammates, coaches, trainers, and fans. “Throughout my four years playing in Buffalo, just the different locker rooms and how tight-knit it was, was something truly special.”
Though Doyle’s football career has ended sooner than he ever imagined, he leaves with memories, friendships, and experiences that will stay with him forever.
While his next move remains unknown, one thing is certain—his time in Buffalo made a lasting impact, and he will always be part of the Bills family.
